Shower Repairs Edinburgh — Fixed Properly, Not Patched Up

A broken shower disrupts the whole household, and the cause is not always obvious. Low pressure might be a blocked hose, a failed pump or a problem with your boiler. A shower that runs cold might be a worn thermostatic cartridge, a faulty heater element or a water supply issue. Because we are both plumbers and Gas Safe registered heating engineers, we can diagnose the whole system — shower, pipework, cylinder and boiler — rather than guessing at the shower unit alone.

We carry common cartridges, hoses, heads, seals and valves on the van, so many repairs are completed in a single visit. Where a part has to be ordered, we will give you an honest timescale and, where safe to do so, leave you with a working shower in the meantime.

Common shower problems we repair

  • Temperature problems: water runs cold, lukewarm, or swings between hot and cold.
  • Low or no pressure: weak flow, flow that drops when another tap is used, or no water at all.
  • Leaks and drips: from the hose, the valve body, behind the wall or around the tray and screen.
  • Electric shower faults: unit will not switch on, trips the electrics or the pull-cord has failed.
  • Mixer and thermostatic valves: stiff controls, worn cartridges, loose or seized handles.
  • Noisy showers: banging, humming or whistling from the unit, pump or pipework.
  • Blocked or limescaled: heads and hoses, failed pumps, broken riser rails and faulty shower pumps.
  • Water escaping the enclosure: re-sealing screens and trays, replacing damaged shower trays and wastes.

If your shower problem is actually a hot water problem — the boiler, cylinder or immersion heater — we can look at that in the same visit. See our boiler repairs page for more.

Shower Replacement & Installation Edinburgh

Sometimes a repair is a false economy. If your shower is more than ten years old, has failed repeatedly, uses parts that are no longer available, or you simply want better performance, a new shower is usually the better investment. We supply and fit all the brands commonly used in UK homes — Mira, Triton, Aqualisa, Bristan, Grohe, Hansgrohe, Vado, Galaxy and more — or we can install a unit you have already purchased.

Not sure what type of shower suits your home? That depends on your water system. We will tell you in plain English what will and will not work before you spend any money.

Electric showers

Heats cold mains water on demand, so it works independently of your boiler and gives you hot water even if the heating is off or the boiler breaks down. The most common type in Edinburgh flats and tenements. We fit like-for-like replacements in a single visit and can upgrade you to a higher-kW unit for a stronger flow where your electrical supply allows.

Mixer showers

Blends hot and cold from your existing supply, so flow and temperature depend on your boiler or cylinder. Ideal for homes with a combi boiler or a good stored hot water supply. We fit exposed and concealed (built-in) mixer valves, bar mixers and bath/shower mixer taps.

Thermostatic showers

A mixer with a built-in thermostat that holds a steady temperature even when someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap elsewhere. Recommended for families with young children or older relatives, and for any home where temperature swings have been a problem.

Power showers & pumps

For homes with a gravity-fed (tank-in-the-loft) system and poor pressure, a power shower or a separate shower pump can transform the flow. We will check your system is suitable before recommending one — pumps are not appropriate for combi boilers or mains-fed systems and we will say so.

Digital and smart showers

Precise temperature control, remote start and app connectivity. We install and set up digital showers from Mira, Aqualisa and Triton, including the wiring, processor unit and handover so you know how to use it.

Switching from an Electric Shower to a Mixer (or Back)

If you have had a new combi boiler fitted, you no longer need an electric shower — a mixer shower will give you a far better flow and uses the boiler’s hot water. Equally, if your boiler is unreliable or you want a backup, an electric shower gives you hot water whatever the boiler is doing. Either change involves pipework and, in the case of electric units, a dedicated electrical supply. We handle both the plumbing and the electrical connection ourselves, so you deal with one engineer and one invoice, and the whole job is done safely and to current regulations.

Repair or Replace? How We Decide

We will always give you a straight answer. As a rule of thumb, we recommend repairing when:

  • The shower is less than 7–8 years old and parts are readily available.
  • The fault is a single component — a cartridge, hose, head, seal or solenoid.
  • The repair cost is well under half the price of a replacement.

And we recommend replacing when:

  • The unit is 10+ years old or the manufacturer has discontinued parts.
  • It has needed more than one repair in the last couple of years.
  • An electric shower shows signs of scorching, casing damage or repeated tripping.
  • Limescale has got inside the heater tank or valve body.
  • You want better pressure, temperature control or a modern look as part of a bathroom refresh.

Replacing as part of a wider bathroom project? We also carry out full bathroom and shower room installations.

What Happens When You Book

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the booking link. Tell us the make and model if you know it, what the shower is doing, and whether you have a combi boiler, a hot water cylinder or a tank in the loft. A photo helps.
  2. Diagnosis. Our engineer tests the shower, the supply pressure and the hot water source and tells you exactly what the problem is and what it will cost to fix — before any work starts.
  3. Repair or replace. Many repairs and like-for-like replacements are completed on the first visit. If a part or a specific unit has to be ordered, we agree a return date with you.
  4. Test and handover. We test for leaks, check temperature and flow, show you how the controls work and leave the bathroom clean and tidy.

Shower Repairs for Landlords & Letting Agents

A tenant with no shower will not wait patiently. We offer prompt attendance, clear quotes and photo reports for landlords and letting agents across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and we can carry out shower repairs on the same visit as a landlord gas safety check or boiler service to keep costs down. Multi-property clients can set up an account with us for priority scheduling.

Why Choose Heat Tech Scotland for Your Shower

  • Plumbers and Gas Safe heating engineers in one: We diagnose the shower, the pipework and the hot water system together, so the real cause gets fixed.
  • Honest advice: A repair where a repair is right; a replacement only where it genuinely saves you money long term.
  • First-visit fixes: Common cartridges, hoses, seals and valves carried on the van.
  • Plumbing and wiring in one visit: We carry out the plumbing and the electrical connection for electric showers ourselves — one engineer, one visit, one invoice.
  • All major brands: Every brand commonly used in the UK — Mira, Triton, Aqualisa, Bristan, Grohe and more; happy to fit a unit you have bought yourself.
  • Unvented cylinder qualified: Qualified to work on unvented hot water cylinders (G3), so mains-pressure stored systems are no problem.
  • 95+ five-star reviews: Rated 5.0 on Google by homeowners and landlords across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Shower Repair & Replacement FAQs

How much does a shower repair cost in Edinburgh?

It depends on the fault. Simple jobs such as a new hose, head or cartridge are usually completed within a standard call-out, while a new thermostatic valve or electric shower unit costs more. We always confirm the price after diagnosis and before carrying out the work, so there are no surprises.

How much does it cost to replace a shower?

A like-for-like electric shower swap is one of the most affordable bathroom jobs. Mixer and thermostatic replacements vary with the unit chosen and whether pipework needs altering. Call us with the make and model (or a photo) and we will give you a clear estimate.

Can you replace my electric shower the same day?

Often, yes — we carry popular electric shower units and can usually fit a like-for-like replacement on the first visit, subject to availability. Call early in the day for the best chance of same-day attendance.

Why does my shower keep going cold?

The most common causes are a worn thermostatic cartridge, a scaled-up or failing heater element in an electric shower, or a hot water supply problem at the boiler or cylinder. We test each in turn rather than replacing parts on guesswork.

My shower pressure is poor — can it be improved?

Usually. The fix depends on your system: a higher-kW electric unit, a shower pump on a gravity-fed system, descaling a head or hose, or correcting the hot water flow from a combi boiler. We will tell you which applies to your home.

Do I need a plumber or an electrician for an electric shower?

With Heat Tech Scotland, neither — we do both. Our engineer handles the plumbing and the electrical connection on the same visit, so you are not waiting on a second trade or paying two call-out charges.

Can you fit a shower I have bought myself?

Yes. We are happy to install customer-supplied showers, provided the unit is suitable for your water system. If it is not, we will tell you before we start rather than fitting something that will underperform.

Do you repair showers in tenement flats?

Yes — a large share of our work is in Edinburgh tenements and flats, where electric showers and shared water supplies are common. We are used to the quirks of older pipework and awkward access.
